Plants This page is dedicated to the different types and varieties of plants that we raise in our greenhouses. Clicking on one of the links on the left will guide you to the pictures and facts about that category. If at anytime you would like to come back to this page simply click on the "Plants" button either on the left or up above. While all the pictures on these pages are actual plants that have been in our greenhouse, not all of them are presently being raised. If there is a particular plant that you are interested in please use the "Suggestions" link to send us an email and we will take your idea into consideration. The pictures on this page are for visual effect and may or may not reflect current plants in the greenhouse. Below are some of the pictures that show how the plants are raised and what materials we use.

This is a "Rockwool Cube." This is one of the mediums that we use to raise our plants. The cube is an inorganic and sterile medium made from spun molten rock. Rockwell Cube Hydroton (pictured here) is the other growing medium that we use. These clay pellets are pH neutral. They are used in aquaponics because of their ability to hold water. It gives the roots of larger plants (tomatoes, peppers, fruit trees) something to get a start with.
We like to stay on the "cutting edge" of technology in our greenhouse, that is why we have installed these LED light panels. They use 3/10 of the electricity of a standard 1000W greenhouse light. We are studying the growth and response to see if they produce the same as standard lights. LED Light Panel Grow Light This is the "standard" greenhouse light that most people use. It is a 1000W white light. It has been tried and tested for many years and has a wonderful track record when it comes to production. The purple/blue ballast that we have installed are the "digital ballast" units that are stated to be about 20% more efficient than the previous version. For anyone that just wants to grow, these are the lights to use.
This picture shows how all the plants start. Each rockwoll cube gets one seed. The cubes are placed inside a tray that lays on top of a warming mat. Cubes with seedlings germinating Seedlings Sprouting The trays are then watered with the nutrient rich water from the system. Once the seedlings have established enough of a root system they are moved into one of the two areas in the following pictures.
This picture shows lettuce in the raft system. Holes are drilled into the floating Styrofoam and the rockwoll cubes are placed in the holes. Raft with plants Bucket with peppers The other method that we are currently using involves placing the rockwool cube in a planting container filled with Hydroton. The type of plant determines which growing container is used. Bigger plants use the hydroton because they would tip the rafts over.
